“CRUISING” FAQs
What should I pack for my cruise?
When packing for a cruise, it is important to bring enough supplies (i.e. tolities, medications, etc…) and clothing to last the entire length of your voyage. There are laundry services offered onboard but can be priced high (some cruise lines/ships do have self-serve laundry facilities). Start with a checklist to better prepare yourself before you leave. One that includes all the essentials like sunscreen, toiletries, medications, swimwear, comfortable shoes, and casual attire, including anything specifically needed for shore excursions. Whatever you do, DON’T forget to bring along your passport and any other travel documents, contact phone numbers you may need. A good reminder to read through ALL cruise documents from your Travel Agent and the cruise line. The earlier the better so you have time to confirm any approaching expirations dates or make any needed corrections.
What is the age limit for cruising?
Most cruise lines will require all passengers to be 21 years of age or older to book a stateroom, but some cruise lines will allow 18-20 year olds to cruise without an adult. Whereas, other cruise lines may just allow you to book a separate, but nearby stateroom with a parent/guardian or adult over 21 on the linked reservation. There are also age requirements for children. Some cruise lines will allow as young as 6 months-1 yr with certain cruise itineraries with minimal sea days (consult the cruise line or your Travel Agent for more details). Be conscious of other age restrictions such as certain shore excursions or activities, salon/spa treatments, access to certain areas of the ship, like the casino, comedy show or adult only areas (some of which consider adults at 18 yrs and older while others 21 yrs and older; varies by cruise line and venue). It's best to check with your Travel Agent first or with the particular cruise line before you book to make sure your ship/itinerary is suitable for your needs.
What fees should I be aware of?
When planning a cruise, it’s important to understand what kinds of fees may be associated with the voyage. Common fees include gratuities, fuel surcharges and port taxes, as well as some onboard activities (Bridge Tour, Cooking Classes, etc…) in addition to the cruise fare. Many cruise lines also have additional fees for services such as laundry, spa treatments, internet access, speciality dining and almost always for shore excursions (some cruise lines offer credit towards shore excursions). Be sure to read through all the information provided before you book your trip so that you are aware of any potential extra costs and NO surprises!
What are my dining options onboard?
Most cruise ships offer a variety of different dining options onboard. You can usually choose from formal, casual and buffet-style restaurants, in addition to a variety of bars, lounges and even grab-n-go options. Other specialty dining experiences may also be available for an additional fee. Some cruise lines offer Specialty Dining Packages for either the whole cruise or packages that allow you to pick (usually 2 or 3) the speciality dining venue(s) you want to dine at. It’s a great way to try something new or to treat yourself for a special occasion for a nominal amount.
How should I manage my money on board?
Most cruise ships have an onboard currency known as “Cruise Cash” or “Onboard Credit” that can be used to purchase goods and services, sometimes as an added perk, promotion or Travel Agent benefit. Otherwise, any charges incurred on board will go on the credit card that was given during the check in process or on the app (varies by cruise line). However, it is usually a good idea to bring along some cash, especially for tips on and off the ship for services or shore excursion guides or for shops in the ports. Some places still take Traveler’s checks in case you need to make a purchase outside of the cruise ship and in a different country. It's also important to check with your bank before leaving for your trip so that you understand the policies regarding ATM withdrawals, credit card charges and other financial transactions while traveling, especially internationally. Another great tip is to bring more than one form of payment (i.e. credit card) in case of emergency and/or to leave one credit card in the stateroom safe while in port or on an excursion. Note: all guests have charging privileges on most ships, so to make sure you little ones (or big ones) don’t charge hundreds of dollars at the arcade, go to guest services to ensure there is a limit or eliminate the privilege altogether. Additionally, some cruise lines or resorts may put “holds” on cards during the cruise/stay which can be an issue with lower limit credit cards and ATM/Debit Cards.
What should I do if I get seasick?
If you are prone to motion sickness, there are several things you can do to help reduce the effects. Dramamine or other over the counter medications may help, but always speak to your doctor well before your trip begins. There are also prescription medications available, so make sure to ask your doctor what options you have. Also try to make sure to drink plenty of water during the trip. You should also stay away from overly-spicy foods, try to stay in the fresh air and avoid any activities that may cause you nausea. Keep in mind lower deck level/mid ship staterooms tend to be best positioned for minimal movement, at least compared to other areas of the ship. Remember, there is always a medical team onboard cruise ships to help you in any way necessary so you feel better and enjoy your vacation.
Are there any safety considerations I should be aware of?
Cruise ships are very safe and they typically have strict security measures in place to ensure the safety of their passengers. Be sure to read through all safety information provided by the cruise line before leaving port and do the required training for the Muster Drill (or they will not leave port, causing delays). Regardless, it is still important to be aware of your surroundings at all times as you would in your normal setting. Do NOT sit on railings or try to climb anything, always be conscious of moveable furniture on the balconies or near railings and NEVER leave children unattended. Additionally, make sure to always lock the doors when entering and exiting your cabin, never leave valuables lying around unattended, keep your passport in a safe place and USE THE STATEROOM SAFES!!! Note: Some cruisers love to decorate their staterooms doors for fun or in celebration, but beware of potential safety implications in doing so (i.e. location of your stateroom is easily identifiable).
Can I bring alcohol onboard?
It is usually not allowed to bring outside alcohol onto a cruise ship. However, some cruise lines may allow passengers to bring a limited amount wine for personal consumption in their cabins. Be sure to check with the cruise line before you leave so that you know what is allowed and what isn't.
What should I do if I have an emergency?
In case of an emergency while on board, it is important to contact the ship's crew immediately. Most cruise lines have a variety of services available to passengers in need, such as medical assistance or help with lost items. Be sure to familiarize yourself with all available emergency services before your trip begins so that you know who and what resources are available in case of an emergency. Note: most cruise lines have very technologically advanced cameras and equipment with facial recognition, so notifying a crew member immediately, is paramount to save time and get answers.
What happens if I miss the ship?
If you happen to miss the ship, you will need to contact your cruise line immediately. Keep all important documents and phone numbers with you at all times to help expedite the process. Depending on the circumstances, they may be able to arrange for you to join the ship at a later port. Be sure to have all necessary contact information ready in case of an emergency like this. A great reason to have travel insurance protection because you never know what can happen and when.
Can I bring my kids with me on the cruise?
Yes, many cruise lines offer special packages for families traveling with children. These family-friendly packages typically include activities and amenities designed specifically for kids, such as swimming pools, miniature golf courses, and dedicated children's play areas. Some cruises may also have complimentary kids’ clubs or babysitting services available for an additional fee. Be sure to check with your cruise line (and specific ship details) for more information, requirements and restrictions (age, height, weight, potty-trained, etc…) BEFORE booking because every ship is different! Note: for those that need a kid-free break, there ARE “adult only” cruises (and All-Inclusive Resorts too)!
How can I keep my kids entertained on board?
Most cruise ships have a variety of activities and entertainment options designed specifically for children, such as scavenger hunts, arts and crafts classes, movie nights, video gaming and arcades. Not to mention, many have swimming pools, water slides, mini-golf, and other engaging activities for any kid, even those at heart. Additionally, many cruise lines offer special programs to help keep kids entertained, such as music lessons and cooking classes. Be sure to check out all the available activities before you set sail so that you can make sure your kids have plenty of fun things to do while on board, especially on sea days. Note: most cruise lines have the ability to assist and cater to special needs children; there are even specifically planned cruises for special needs kids, so ask your Travel Advisor for more info.
Are there any age restrictions for onboard activities?
Yes, many cruise ships have age restrictions for certain activities and services. For example, most cruise lines have a minimum age requirement of 21 for gambling activities or to drink, but some “adult only” areas of the ship may be considered an adult at 18. Some cruise companies may also have specific age restrictions for certain activities, such as swimming pools, arcades or hang out areas (like teen space) or “adult only” venues (comedy club, solarium or spa). Depending on the cruise line, some activities may even be limited to passengers of a certain age range, so it's best to check with the cruise line or travel advisor directly for more information to better determine the right fit for your wants and needs.
What sort of clothing should I bring on board?
Although dress codes vary depending on your cruise line, ship, venue or event, it's usually a good idea to pack a few casual outfits and shorts, as well as comfortable shoes for exploring the ship. For formal nights, you may need to bring more formal attire like cocktail dresses or suits if you choose to partake. In general, casual clothes for exploring on and off the ship (or shore excursion appropriate), nice or smart casual for most day activities/venues indoors, and evening tends to be either themed, semi-formal, or formal nights, so check your cruise calendar on your app. Swimwear outdoors by the pool is acceptable but if going indoors, even just to grab food, a cover-up or shirt is most likely required. Each cruise line is different, so make sure to check the cruise's specific dress code before you leave so that you know what to expect and can pack accordingly. Note: There are plenty of cruise lines and ships to accommodate anyone’s comfort levels and/or fashion sense.
Can I bring my pet on board?
Unfortunately, most cruise lines do not allow pets onboard the ship. However, some may offer designated kennel services where you can board your pet for the duration of the cruise, but those are very few and mostly only on transatlantic cruises. Be sure to check with your specific cruise line before bringing any animals aboard, even official service animals.
